In response to the South's continued practice of segregation, a group of activists from all backgrounds and races rode interstate buses into the deep South. SET IN 1961, FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT HAD OUTLAWED SEGREGATION, BUS LINES LINES AND CITIES THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH STILL ENFORCED A RIGID SYSTEM OF SEPARATING BLACK AND WHITE CITIZENS.
